For many years, the United States has been waging a grueling war; the population has grown impoverished, and to boost morale across the country an annual competition called The Long Walk is held. Fifty young people participate in it, and they must walk at a speed of not less than three miles per hour; after three violations a participant is eliminated. The winner will be the last one remaining, and he will receive a large sum and the fulfillment of one wish. In addition to the other 'lucky ones' in the new game, Raymond Gerreti participates, and he isn't in a hurry to tell his fellow travelers what wish he will grant if he wins.
