Media outlets are all talking about the comet approaching Earth, but structural engineer John Garrity is more worried about saving his collapsing marriage. Today they have a neighborhood party planned with the neighbors, and, heading to the supermarket for groceries, John suddenly receives a presidential message that he and his family have been chosen for rescue in a secret bunker. At first, he does not take it seriously, but soon the shock wave from the impact of the comet’s first fragments with Earth rolls into their quiet suburb, and terrifying footage of the destruction begins to be broadcast on every channel. Seated in the car with his wife and son under the puzzled looks of the neighbors, John hurries to the airport, where those who have received the messages are being boarded onto cargo planes.
