Kartini arrives in Jakarta to study and decides to rent a room in an old-fashioned women's dormitory, where three rules must be observed: arriving an hour before sunset, not leaving her room until sunrise, and having dinner together for three consecutive evenings with the other female students in the dining hall. Having deemed the conditions reasonably acceptable, Kartini moves into the room and soon learns that the building once had a fire in which all the occupants perished.
