In 1977, a widower and former researcher arrives in Recife, where the carnival is held. He settles in a guesthouse with a hospitable elderly landlady and visits his young son, who lives with his grandfather and grandmother. The man also takes a job at the city bureau for issuing identity documents, where he hopes to find his mother's documents, and it seems that someone is hiding from someone.
