African American comics artist Kif is about to become a real star—he's talented and somewhat carefree, and he's not particularly concerned about the problem of racism in the United States. But on one unfortunate day the cops brutalize him, after which his life changes radically—he begins to hear inanimate objects, and he has conversations with them about socio-political topics. Soon the artist realizes that his way of thinking has changed forever.
