Two young, beautiful women form a strong friendship. Marie de Roan, Duchess of Chevreuse—lively and cheerful, free in soul and body—seeks adventures. Anne of Austria, Queen of France—prim, prudish, a shy girl who, having married too young and abandoned by her husband, King Louis XIII, suffers from neurasthenia. The duchess strives to reunite the queen with the king, bringing merriment into the calm royal atmosphere and provoking courtly disputes.
