Year 1939. Having finished with his old life, Stan Carlisle makes his way wherever his eyes lead and attaches himself to a wandering sideshow. There he begins to master all sorts of entertainments and to fool the public, especially "mind-reading" by the method of one of the popular performers of yesteryear. Soon Stan decides to perform a similar act on his own.
