The series tells the origin of the historical document The Book of Negroes, recounting the story from the perspective of Aminata Diallo, who was enslaved at the age of 11 in West Africa and brought to South Carolina. The main character goes through the period of the American Revolution and moves between cities and countries before becoming free in England.
