In the decisive, deadly battle for the fate of Earthrealm, the victory over the mighty warrior and mage Shen Sung was won by the last great fighter, the young monk from the Temple of the Light Order, Kung Lao. As punishment for the defeat, the all-powerful ruler of Outworld, the cruel emperor Shao Kahn, banished Shen Sung to the bottomless cobalt mines, where defeated fighters from hundreds of enslaved realms are tormented. Meanwhile Kung Lao, dreaming of marrying the beauty Jen, faces desperate resistance from her father, who banishes the monk and the daughter's bodyguard Shiro from his lands. With the help of the fearless thief Taja, they attempt to kidnap Jen, but the ruthless Scorpion, Shen Sung's loyal servant, kills the beauty. Kung Lao's mentor—the Thunder God and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden—summons the brave warrior and his friends to gather Earth's finest fighters and avenge Shen Sung, who in captivity is assembling an army to participate in the next Mortal Kombat tournament, hoping to reclaim the lost glory of the invincible hero.
