A construction magnate buys Novosti, the country's last independent newspaper, and it is obvious to the paper's staff that the purchase is being made in the interests of those in power, namely the mayor, who plans to run in the upcoming presidential elections. Late at night, just before the negotiations to purchase the newspaper conclude, a traffic accident occurs, claiming the lives of three people. The journalists at Novosti begin their own investigation into the incident.
