In 1975, a small town near Belfast. A 24-year-old Kushla, a teacher at a Catholic school, moonlights behind the bar and cares for her mother, who suffers from alcoholism. While working behind the bar, she meets and soon grows close to Michael, a married Protestant rights advocate significantly older than her, who, due to his activities, is under threat of violence from both the IRA and the British.
