The tale concerns the fate of the Dorrit family, headed by the weak and vainglorious bankrupt William Dorrit, who spent twenty years in the Marshalsea debtors' prison in London. His younger daughter Amy, born and raised in the prison, preserves modesty, devotion, and kindness in all of life’s situations: when she has to work for a crust of bread, and when fortune brings the family unexpected wealth.
