Four pampered animals from the Central Zoo in New York: the lion Alex, the zebra Marty, the giraffe Melman, and the hippopotamus Gloria, decide to escape. After a shipwreck they find themselves on the exotic island of Madagascar, inhabited by lemurs and the fossas that prey on them. The travelers realize with horror that they will have to part with their city habits. There are no humans, no favorite cages, and no tasty food.
