The events of the series take place in Los Angeles. Upon arriving home, Nate, the son of Nathaniel Fischer, the head of the family, unexpectedly learns of his father's death. Nate's younger brother, David, is a reserved gay and the manager of a funeral home. Nate's sister, Claire, a rebellious teenager, learns the sad news while under the influence of drugs that she had tried with her new boyfriend Gabe. The only joy in Nate's life comes from Brenda, a passionate woman whom Nate met on a plane. However, Brenda's family members turn out to be even stranger than Nate's family...
