After a long stay on sick leave, Peter Wendell returns to duty. He is tasked with forming a new team to review unsolved murder cases. Under his command are Barbro, who has never worked in the police and has problems with alcohol, Kaisa, and Jorma, who is about to leave the police. Very soon they find themselves at the center of a new investigation. An unknown criminal makes it clear that the most famous serial killer in Sweden is a fraud, that he never committed the murders for which he was convicted. This is a major scandal for Sweden: the threads lead to the corridors of power, and the shadow falls even on the government.
