The series’ main character is Olivia Rönning, a young student at a police academy, who, as part of her training, takes on an unsolved case: in 1987, on the Swedish island Nordkoster, three unknown individuals buried a pregnant woman in the sand, and then, during high tide, the so-called syzygy, she was drowned; a nine-year-old boy witnessed the murder. The investigation was led by Inspector Tom Stilton, but the evidence was too scarce, so the case stalled. Twenty-four years later, Olivia, the daughter of the late police officer, restarts the investigation, bringing to light what had lain buried for more than twenty years, and she meets Tom Stilton, who has changed beyond recognition—he has lost his job and become homeless.
