The year 1968. Maria duKarmu, a poor woman from a small town, arrives in Rio de Janeiro with her four sons and newborn daughter Lindalva at the height of a military coup. She wants to temporarily stay at Sebastiao's bar and try to find work, to pull herself out of utter poverty and finally obtain the opportunity to raise her children with dignity. However, in the chaos, Maria duKarmu's newborn daughter is kidnapped. Driven mad with grief, she roams the streets of the city, trying to find the baby. She is thrown into prison on a false accusation. After her release, Maria meets her brother and finds the children, all except Lindalva.
